Zeiss LSM 880 is an upright laser scanning confocal with Fast Airyscan technology, located in the 00-060 imaging room.
The Airyscan module is a new detector concept featuring a 32 channel GaAsP-PMT area detector. The Airyscan detector brings simultaneous improvements in spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio in comparison with conventional confocal microscopy. The 1.5X improvement in lateral resolution of the Airyscan technology allows the LSM 880 microscope to resolve small structures up to 120 nm in XY and 350 nm in Z.
The Fast module upgrade expands the applications of the Airyscan to live cell imaging. The technique uses beam shaping optics to elongate the excitation spot along the y axis so that it covers simultaneously four lines of the Airyscan detector in a single scan. This parallelisation approach increases acquisition speeds by a factor of four, whilst retaining the improvements in SNR and resolution of the Airyscan technology. The Fast Airyscan mode reduces photo-bleaching and allows acquisition speeds of up to 19 frames per second at 512 x 512 image size.
See below the principles of the Airyscan and Fast mode available for download.
