Proper acknowledgement provides a visible measure of the impact and success of the facility and helps us to secure support and funding.

Our Acknowledgement and Publication Policy

Micron follows the Department of Biochemistry’s SRF (Scientific Research Facility) acknowledgement policy, which was developed in line with official RMS and Global BioImaging guidelines for the acknowledgement and co-authorship of facility staff.

SRFs play a crucial role in supporting world-class research activity. Our SRFs are run by highly skilled scientists who are experts in their specialised fields. They can contribute to numerous areas such as experimental design, sample preparation, data acquisition, data analysis and manuscript drafting and review.

SRF staff contributions must be recognised in manuscripts, posters, conference proceedings and other outlets, just as any other co-authors would be. Giving credit to staff is important for their career development and also helps to raise the profile of the SRFs and generate further collaborations and funding opportunities.

Our guidelines for SRF staff recognition follow the principles set out in the University of Oxford's MSD Fair Attribution Guidelines for Technical and Specialist Support. Contract or payment for SRF services supplied should not impact on the recognition of their contribution in supporting, enabling, or performing the research.

Type of Facility Use

User-led instrument use after completion of training.

Acknowledgement

Simple statement in the Acknowledgements section.

Type of Facility Use

Facility-led data with RAW data sent to the user.

Acknowledgement

Simple statement in the Acknowledgements section.

Type of Facility Use

Specialist support in experimental design, data acquisition, data analysis, and manuscript figure preparation.

Acknowledgement

Intellectual contributions such as these often warrant authorship. Please have a conversation with the SRF staff before starting the project.

Example acknowledgements

‘the authors gratefully acknowledge the Micron Bioimaging Facility for their support & assistance in this work’, and the facility should be informed of the publication.

Where users have had significant help from a particular member of Micron staff, this staff member should be acknowledged by name, e.g., ‘the authors thank *** of Micron BioImaging Facility for their support & assistance in this work’.

Where Leica Centre of Excellence equipment was used, please use

‘the authors gratefully acknowledge the Leica Microsystems Centre of Excellence at the Micron Bioimaging Facility, University of Oxford for their support & assistance in this work’ and the facility should be informed of the publication.

Our advanced imaging capabilities are made possible through the generous support of our funders:

  • Zeiss LSM 980 Airyscan 2 – funded by the Wellcome Trust and EPA (awarded to Professor Ilan Davis)
  • Evident ScanR – funded by CRUK (awarded to Professor Kim Nasmyth) and EPA (Micron)
  • ONI Nanoimager – funded by CRUK (awarded to Professor Francis Barr) and the Wellcome Trust (awarded to Dr Madhusudhan Srinivasan)
  • Evident Spinning Disk – funded by the John Fell Fund and EPA (Micron)
  • VT iSIM – funded by the ERC (awarded to Professor Neil Brockdorff), the John Fell Fund, and EPA (Micron)

Our publication and acknowledgement policy is built upon the RMS publication policy created by Dr Natasha Stephen, Director of Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre.
